We believe that people grow spiritually when they have a commitment to God and the Bible and significant relationships with other Christians. We can grow spiritually best when we pray, study the Bible, and fellowship together on a regular basis. Our Life Groups will help you grow in these relationships.
THE PURPOSE OF LIFE GROUPS
Life Groups exist to promote spiritual maturity and personal growth through meaningful Christian relationships and study of God’s Word (Romans 8:29 & Hebrews 10:24-25). Here’s how it will happen. A trained leader and host lead each group. Light refreshments will be provided.
1. SHARE: Each week we’ll take time to share what is happening in our lives.
2. STUDY: Each week we’ll study a section from God’s Word that relates to the previous weekend’s sermon or an appropriate personal growth topic. Our goal is to learn how to live out our Christianity in everyday life. You will receive your "Life Group Questions" each Sunday at church. If you did not attend the worship service last Sunday, just go here and download the "Life Group Questions" and watch/listen to Sunday's sermon. Please write your answers prior to the group meeting.
3. SUPPORT : Life Groups take care of one another as Christ commanded (John 15:9-13). This care can take many forms, such as prayer, encouragement, listening, challenging one another and meeting real needs.
4. SERVE : Life Groups participate in the mission work of HBChurch in a variety of ways. You will learn how to be the hands and feet of Jesus to the community and world in which we live (Ephesians 4:11-16). Throughout the session it is our hope that you can discover the ways God has gifted you to serve and make a difference in God’s Kingdom.
When do life groups meet?
These small groups require a 9 or 10 week commitment depending on the session, and are comprised of 10-20 people. The meeting times vary depending on the group. The groups usually meet for 1.5 - 2 hours.
There are three Life Group Sessions per year - winter, spring, and fall - taking a break during Easter, summer months, and Thanksgiving-Christmas-New Year. At the end of each session, you will have the choice of staying in the same group, trying a new group or even taking a break.
What is the required commitment?
Joining a Life Group requires a 9 or 10 week commitment to attend weekly meetings and do the Life Group Questions ahead of time. Obviously, allowances are made for sickness, vacation, work conflicts and other special events, but not much more. This commitment is the key to a strong Life Group. You have the first three weeks to attend the group to make sure it's a good fit for you.
What will we study?
Most of the groups are based on the previous weekend's message. Each week there will be Life Group Questions provided to study before the meeting . It will usually take 20 minutes per week to complete the questions. There are also specialized groups that focus on specific spiritual growth topics (e.g. marriage, parenting, finances, grief, etc.).
What does it cost?
Few things in life are free and Life Groups are no exception! The cost of Life Groups is the cost of commitment. During the third week of the session, each group will complete a "covenant" together. This simple form helps each group discuss their priorities and commitment. Part of that commitment is the promise to attend each week and to complete the Life Group Questions as well as to attend the group's social and to participate in the group's mission project. You have the first three weeks to decide if your group is a good fit for you.
When you join a Life Group, you're promising to attend and be prepared each week. It's this commitment that makes Life Groups work. We realize it's a big commitment, but it only lasts for 9 or 10 weeks. At the end of each session, you have the choice of recommitting for another session, trying a new group, or taking a break from Life Groups altogether.
WHat about child care?
Ideally, Life Groups are for adults only. (Exceptions can be made for nursing newborns, up to six months.) We leave it up to each family to work out their own child care. Sometimes it works best for families to share a sitter or to swap child care with another family whose Life Group meets on a different evening. We also allow individual Life Group leaders to choose to handle child care in the way that best fits their group. Talk to the leader of a particular group for further information.
How do I choose a group?
When selecting a group, we strongly recommend you choose a group based on which group is filled with your friends or other people who may share a common stage in life, rather than choosing a group based on location. We've found that groups do best when members share a common Station-in-Life and other interests with their leaders, hosts, and other group members. In the end, you'll find it's worth the drive!
If you have any questions (especially if you are new to Huntington Beach Church), please don't hesitate to call the church, and we will gladly assist you. Keep in mind that it might take two or three groups before you find the perfect fit, but don't worry, you'll find it!
Take a look at the sidebar for a list of groups.
How do I sign up for a group?
Before each Life Group session begins there are three ways to sign up for a group - online, at our weekend services, or by calling the church office. During the weekend services, Life Group staff members are available at the sign-up booths to help you choose a group and answer any questions. There are two sign-up weekends before the beginning of our Winter Session in January, our Spring Session in April and our Fall Session in September.
Throughout the year we also offer "Intro Life Groups" which run for three weeks. These groups are designed for people new to Life Groups who would like to find out how they work and what they are all about.
You can call the church office at (714) 842-0975 or the Life Group Administrator at any time to get assistance in finding and signing up for a group, or answer any questions.
Is there a teenager Life Group?
Yes, our teenagers are active in a group called Youth Life. This Life Group is very important to our church. Youth Life meets several times per LG session for socials and mission projects. For more information about Youth Life, please contact our Church Office at (714) 842-0975.
We also allow individual Life Group leaders to choose to make specific exceptions to allow certain teenagers to participate in their Life Groups.
